Which CMS is better to my website?
The best CMS depends on many factors. However, to simplify it, I have chosen only 3.
- Who will create your website?
- What is the website for?
- How much control you want to have over your site?
Who will create your website?
No-professional web designer
In that case, Wix is perfect. Today, anyone can make a website. Even without any programming knowledge. CMS, such as Wix, are evolving to offer a drag and drop tool and ready made templates. With just a couple of hours self-training anyone can have a website. Wix has over 500 templates, not all free, ready made, and most are responsive, which means mobile friendly.
Web designer
For a professional, both are a valid option. Nevertheless, most will choose WordPress. This is due to more control over building an unique site, the ability to change the website to the core if needed amongst other reasons.
What is the website for? What is its goal?
Overall, there´s 6 types of website goals:
1- Capture leads (potential customers).
2 - Sell products or services.
3- Create authority on a given subject.
4- Promote your products.
5- Share knowledge.
6- Others
With Wix can achieve goals 2, 4, 5 and 6.
With WordPress poderá atingir todos os objetivos mencionados.
why this big difference?
Wix gives little room to improve and modify yourself, you cannot work on SEO (Search engine optimization). On the free plan, Wix has all set up and even on paid plans is difficult to improve SEO, which makes difficult for a Wix website to rank well on Goole search for instance. On the other hand, on their free plan a website will have the word wixsite associated with the domain. These makes a domain harder to remember and gives an unprofessional feel to any website.
Wix has been working to improve its weak points. Recently, it has an e-commerce option and some SEO support. But these options comes with a high cost.
How about WordPress?
Let´s consider WordPress.org, there is total freedom to build a website. You can build a website with good SEO strategies, right from the beginning. You can change add and change themes, plugins and other feature to suit your goals.
WordPress is not shorter of templates, in fact there´s over 11.000 themes to choose from. With over 50,000 plugins in the WordPress repository. And even if all these is not enough to create an unique website, WordPress allows you to modify it as you pleased.
Web designers and web developers can adjust a part or the entire website, thus meeting fully website´s goals.
This is because, the WordPress CMS (content management system) of WordPress under the GNU General Public LicenseFree software means the users have the freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software.
In addition to the freedom to change the site to make it exactly the way you want it, WordPress benefits from a large, strong and active worldwide online community that helps anyone find answers to any questions they may have.
How much control you want to have over your site?
O Wix does not have an open CMS. Therefore, its solutions are closed options. It is either take it or leave it solutions.
These solutions are not fit to all websites and takes away the control to adapt your website to your purposes. If one wants to stand out of your competitors, Wix is not adequate.
Another Wix issue is how hard is to migrate a website to another server. Wix will not make things hard but surely not easy too.
O WordPress, like we said before, has open source CMS and as a result you have total control over it.
Migrate a WordPress from one web hosting provider to another is simple. There´s dedicated plugins for it and most of web hosting providers offers this service. Moreover, its is now common for hosting providers to have a WP hosting plan. This simplify the transfer process.
